Carragher: Salah deserves a lucrative contract

The Liverpool legend considers the Egypt international among the Reds’ greatest players of all time.

Mohamed Salah

scored his 100th Premier League goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday. The Egyptian star is yet to sign a new contract at Anfield, with his current deal set to be expired in 2023.

Liverpool have renewed the contracts of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, and Andy Robertson in recent months. With Salah being expected to become the next senior player to get a new contract,

Jamie Carragher

says the 29-year-old deserves a pay rise.

He told

Sky Sports

:

"While Liverpool have not spent big this summer like other teams, they have had a lot of players sign new contracts. The one that is yet to sign is Mo Salah.

"Now, he obviously wants a few quid. And rightly so. Good luck to him. He deserves it. He deserves to be one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League for what he has done since he came to Liverpool, he really does.”

Having spent an unsuccessful spell at Chelsea, Salah joined Roma on a loan deal in 2015. The Serie A side signed a permanent deal with the Egyptian in 2016, only to sell him to Liverpool on a £36.5m deal a year later.

"He is never injured and year after year he is top goalscorer. He just is. That is what he is."

Carragher added.

"I will say something else. When you pick your all-time Liverpool XI, there are positions where you just think, 'He is in.' Alan Hansen, Graeme Souness, John Barnes, Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish. You could fill all those positions no matter what this team does.

"There is nobody you ever think of on the right. Mo Salah will be in that position when he finishes his Liverpool career. He will be in that all-time Liverpool XI. There is no doubt for me about that.”

Since his move from Roma, Salah has quickly established himself as one of the deadliest strikers of the Premier League. The Egypt international has scored 128 goals and provided 49 assists in his 207 games for the Merseyside outfit.

The former Liverpool defender added:

"When you think about strikers getting to 29 or 30, we talk about Cristiano Ronaldo being 36, that guy is a machine in terms of how he looks after himself.

"I think Mo Salah is as professional as Ronaldo, he looks after his body and I think there are a lot of years left in Mo Salah so I just hope this gets sorted sooner rather than later.

"You always debate about money, the player wants a bit more, the club wants a bit less, but that needs to be sorted. Fingers crossed it will because he deserves it for what he has done for Liverpool."

Liverpool are expected to renew Salah’s contract before he enters the final year of his current deal. The Egyptian star has been linked with several top clubs before, but Liverpool have made sure to keep the striker due to his key role in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
