Liverpool will not release Salah for Tokyo Olympics

The Reds have informed Egypt’s FA that Mohamed Salah will not be permitted to play for the Olympic men’s football tournament at Tokyo 2020.

The Chairman of Egypt’s FA revealed that

Mohamed Salah

was eager to represent his country in Tokyo but

did not give him permission.

Clubs are not forced to send players to the men's Olympic football tournament since FIFA’s match calendar does not recognize that competition officially.

The Olympics start from July 22 to August 7, a week before the beginning of the Premier League season and the Reds told the Egyptian FA that the 29-year-old would not be released.

We started talking with them a long time ago because Salah wanted to play the Olympic Games, but Liverpool were unclear,"

Ahmed Megahed told

BBC Sport Africa

"I knew in June they would not let him go. Anyway we respect their decision.

"I tried many, many times with Liverpool, as did the Egypt FA, to persuade them to let Salah be a part of the Olympic team but they refused completely.

"Mohamed wanted to play the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. He talked with me, I did my best to bring him. Salah was a key player in my Olympic plans. But the club refused - we need to move on."

The Egypt international has not talked about the issue publicly and Egypt revealed the squad on Friday.

Gharib could not call up Aston Villa's Mohamed Trezeguet due to injury. Trezeguet and Salah would have been Gharib’s allowed overage players as the squad of Men’s Olympic should be under 23, with three overage players. However, since the Tokyo Game was delayed due to Covid-19, it changed to under 24.
