Aymeric Laporte set to switch to Spain for this summers’ Euro

Manchester City center-back Aymeric Laporte is set to switch allegiance from France to Spain ahead of this summer’s European Championship.

The 26-year-old has been one of the best center-backs in the Premier League, but despite his performance, he failed to break into the France national team. He has been called up three times by

Didier Deschamps

but is yet to make his senior debut.

Laporte

is understood to have French and Spanish nationality and is of Basque descent through his great-grandparents.

The Spanish Football Federation has done all paperwork with FIFA and is waiting for the final approval from the world governing body, and he could play at Euro 2020.

The defender has previously maintained a public desire to play for France.

“I spoke with [France coach] Didier Deschamps about coming back for Les Bleus, I am trying to show that I have the qualities to make the French national team,”

he said in 2020

.

"Certainly, making the Euros at the end of this [season] would be the best thing.”
