Ramos: Leaving Sevilla was painful

The Blancos defender opens up on 'lies' around his transfer to Real Madrid in 2005.

Having left

Sevilla

as a promising center-back,

Sergio Ramos

joined

Real Madrid

in 2005. The Spanish defender has become a club icon at Santiago Bernabeu, where he has enjoyed great domestic and continental success with the Blancos. However, the 35-year-old still feels disappointed by the manner of his departure from Andalusia.

"I know what Sevilla is and how the fans feel,"

Ramos stated in his Amazon documentary

The Legend of Sergio Ramos

. "Nobody can tell me, because I've experienced it since I was young.

"All of the information was manipulated, and they lied to Sevilla. It was painful, not only for me but for my family. I'll never forgive them for the pain my grandparents went through, for my parents, who cannot return to Sevilla's stadium.”

Ramos enjoyed a great breakthrough in the 2004-2005 season when he was rumored to have been approached by Sevilla with a lifetime contract to secure his stay at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. However, the young defender moved to Real Madrid in August 2005 following

Florentino Perez

's lucrative offer.

"I've made mistakes in my life and one of the biggest was not coming out publicly to explain [the move]. I let others tell the story for me.

"My signing was fully agreed between the clubs; it wasn't Real Madrid meeting a clause, as it was said to have been. That meant the fans didn't give me the same affection that I've always had and always will have for the club."
