Zanetti reveals Inter tried to sign Lionel Messi in 2021

The 7-time Ballon d’Or winner finally achieved his dream of winning the World Cup, but his club future is still in doubt with his PSG contract due to expire this summer. Zanetti reveals Inter tried to sign the Argentine upon his departure from Barcelona in 2021.

After lifting 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Barcelona,

Lionel Messi

left the Catalan club to join Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 when his contract expired. Messi's former Argentina captain,

Javier Zanetti

revealed that Nerazzurri tried to sign Messi in 2021 but fell short due to their financial inferiority. He told

DAZN

:

"I was surprised when he left Barcelona.

"Realistically, we cannot compete with PSG or Premier League clubs, but due to our rapport, we spoke when there was a chance."

Inter

's vice-president continued to express his mixed feelings about the club's Serie A season. He added:

"We could have done more in the league. We miss some points, but it's part of a path that this team is consistently carrying out.

"Mistakes are normal with such a packed fixture list, but I've always seen a team that wants to impose its style, trying to cause trouble for opponents.

"We've been able to react to difficulties and I find that some criticism has been exaggerated."

Although

Milan Skriniar

is set to join PSG when his contract ends this summer, Zanetti hopes the Slovakian keeps his focus on Inter for the current season.

"

We offered him a contract within our financial reach, but he made a different choice

," Zanetti added.

"Now we need to put him in the best condition to give his best until the end of the season."
