Chelsea qualify for Champions League last 16 after Salzburg victory

Chelsea secured qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League with a victory over FC Salzburg at the Red Bull Arena on Tuesday.

Chelsea is at top of the group with 10 points after five matches. Salzburg is in second place with 6 points. Milan and Dinamo Zagreb both have 4 points after 4 matches.

Chelsea opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Mateo Kovacic. Balle reached Kovacic on the edge of the box. He swung his left boot and smashed the ball into the top-left corner.

Chelsea had a few good chances to score the second goal but Salzburg goalkeeper, Philipp Kohn, saved the net on the other side.

Salzburg equalized through Adamu in the 48th minute. The home side counter-attacked and Okafor passed to Wober on the left. He crossed early for Adamu, who side-foot a half volley beyond Kepa and the ball rolled into the far corner.

Jorginho could score moments later with a header from the corner but Salzburg's defender cleared the ball off the line.

Kai Havertz scored the second goal for the Blues in the 64th minute. Pulisic showed brilliant skill to evade three Salzburg defenders before finding Havertz. His first touch brought the ball across his body and the second was a left-footed shot that curled toward the top corner and smashed off the bottom of the bar and finally found the back of the net.

Salzburg could equalize just five minutes later but Pavlovic's header was cleared off the line by Thiago Silva.
